About Peoria, AZ

Peoria is located roughly 30 minutes north of downtown Phoenix and was established in 1886. As of 2017, the city has a population of around 170,000 people and is the sixth-largest city in Arizona for land area (179 square miles) but only ninth in population size. Surprisingly, Peoria was named after the city of the same name in Illinois.

History

The history of Peoria began back in 1886 when William John Murphy recruited residents from the sister city of Peoria, Illinois to move to the area that sits in the Salt River Valley that extends into the foothills of the surrounding mountains. The first post office of Peoria appeared in 1888 and served only 27 people and the first school building was just a one-room structure completed in 1891.
